This rare and unique Tibetan Chest dates to the mid 19th century. Tibetan artisans skillfully mastered
the art of "Gesso" - working with gypsum paste which allows for the creation of raised painted decoration.
The patterns of "Gesso" depended on the use of each chest. This particular one was used to preserve
valuables, hence the dragons or "Kirttimkha", which served as guardians. Although
Tibetan pieces are rare, they have obvious specifications which make them easily identifiable.
Most are not carved, but instead utilized the art of "Gesso". The vibrant colors and intricate painted raised designs are strongly
indicative to Tibet and its artisans. (Click on the images to see detail.)
