

This tapered "noodle" cabinet is an excellent example of Artisans copying earlier designs. The original
dates back to the 16th century (Ming Dynasty) but lacks the laquered rattan inlay of this piece. The tong
wood used in this cabinet is from the south of china and is similar to pine but was much more
abundant as the trees thrived in the warm, wet climate. The red laquer finish is also typical of
latter 18th century southern chinese styles. (Click on the images to see detail.)
